CHART MBR / SEC 50 / MARKET REPORT / JULY 2026
Middlesbrough SEO market report
Observations on how Teesside businesses actually appear in search, sector by sector. Two of them carry dated Search Console figures from my own sites elsewhere, named as such.
What this report can and cannot tell you
Sectors covered: process and chemical, engineering, offshore wind, professional services.
FIXEDDated search volume figures I hold for Middlesbrough specifically. None exist, so none are printed.
FIXEDNo dated figure for Middlesbrough search demand appears in anything I have pulled. I am not going to estimate one, because an estimate dressed up as a measurement is the exact practice this site argues against.
What I do hold is Google Search Console data from two sites I run myself, in Guildford and in Leeds. Those are not Middlesbrough's figures and are never offered as Middlesbrough's figures. The source town is named every single time a number appears below.
Much of the demand for a term like this is not buyers
On my own Leeds site, the queries that look like agency demand sit next to a large block of queries from people who want a course or a job. Those searchers are not businesses looking to hire anybody.
| Query | Impressions |
|---|---|
| seo course leeds | 197 |
| seo courses leeds | 178 |
| seo jobs leeds | 155 |
| seo training leeds | 151 |

| Subtotal, the rows above only | 823 |
SOURCED Google Search Console, my own Leeds site, 90 days to 18 July 2026. These are impressions recorded by one site. They are not the size of the Leeds market and they say nothing whatever about the size of the Middlesbrough one.
The transferable part is structural rather than numerical. A Teesside firm chasing the bare phrase seo middlesbrough is competing for attention with training providers and job boards, not only with other agencies.
That is a good reason to build pages around the process, material or accreditation a buyer actually types, which is what the sector sections below describe.
Demand exists at positions nobody sees
Click-through rate on every query recorded across my Guildford and Leeds sites in this window, with one exception.
SOURCEDThe average position range those queries sat at. Google Search Console, Guildford and Leeds sites, 90 days to 18 July 2026.
SOURCEDSOURCED Google Search Console, my own Guildford and Leeds sites, 90 days to 18 July 2026. The single exception was the phrase seo guildford, which returned one click from 1,035 impressions on the Guildford site.
That is unflattering about my own sites and it is the honest reading of the data. MECHANISM Impressions accumulate long before clicks do, because a page sitting at position 40 to 95 is technically present and practically invisible.
The implication for a Middlesbrough firm is that presence is not visibility. Being indexed for a term proves the demand is there; it does not mean a single buyer has seen you.
Process and chemical industry
This is the sector where the gap between technical competence and search presence is widest. Firms here hold genuinely deep expertise and typically publish almost none of it in a form a search engine can use.
The dominant pattern is a small brochure site with an about page, a contact page, and one services page covering the entire operation. Meanwhile the substance sits in tender documents and capability statements that never reach the public site.
Buyers in this sector search in the language of process and compliance: specific standards, materials, handling requirements and sector experience. A page that speaks that language plainly has very little competition because so few firms have written one.
The practical implication is that the recoverable ground here is unusually large and does not require a rebuild. It requires publishing what you already know.
Engineering and fabrication
This sector is more competitive than process and chemical and more likely to have had some SEO done at some point, often several years ago and rarely maintained.
The common failure is a single fabrication page trying to cover structural steel, pipework, pressure vessels, machining and site services at once. Each of those is a distinct search with a distinct buyer. One page competes properly for none of them.
Approvals and certifications are the other recurring miss. They are the first thing a serious buyer filters on and they are frequently mentioned only as logos in a footer image. That format is invisible to both search engines and AI assistants.
Offshore wind supply chain
This is the most interesting sector on Teesside from a search perspective because the buyer often has no existing local relationships at all.
Developers and tier one contractors moving into the region need to identify local capability quickly. They do a meaningful part of that discovery online before anyone picks up a phone. That is a discovery pattern search can genuinely influence.
The firms best placed here are the ones that state plainly what they can do at what scale, with what accreditations, and what comparable work they have delivered. Vague claims of being a trusted partner to the renewables sector do nothing because every competitor makes the same claim.
This is also the sector where AI assistant visibility matters most today because an unfamiliar buyer researching a new region is exactly the person who asks an assistant to summarise local capability.
Professional and business services
Accountants, solicitors, recruiters and consultancies serving Teesside behave more like a conventional local search market. The competition is correspondingly tougher.
Here the map pack matters far more than it does industrially. Proximity does real work. A firm in the town centre and a firm in Stockton are competing on partly different searches whether they intend to or not.
The differentiator that reliably works is specificity of service rather than volume of content. A page about a particular problem a particular type of client has will outperform another general overview of the practice area.
The pattern that runs through all four
Teesside firms tend to under-publish. The expertise is real, the track record is real, and the website says a fraction of it.
This is partly cultural and partly rational: in an economy built on long relationships and repeat contracts, the website was never the thing that won work. That is changing for the specific reason described above. New entrants without local relationships are arriving and they search first.
The good news in that is the cheapest kind of improvement. Publishing what you already know is far less expensive than manufacturing authority you do not have.
Frequently asked questions
Why does this report contain no search volume figure for Middlesbrough?
Because no dated figure for this town exists in anything I have pulled, and I will not estimate one to fill the gap. The Search Console figures that do appear on this page come from my own Guildford and Leeds sites and are labelled with their source town every time. They are evidence about how demand is shaped, not a measurement of Teesside.
Is search volume even the right measure for industrial sectors?
Often not; this is where generic SEO advice misleads industrial firms badly. A term searched a handful of times a month can be worth more than one searched thousands of times when those few searches are procurement leads sourcing a specific process. Volume is a poor proxy for value when the contract sizes are large.
Does the Teesworks and freeport activity change the search picture?
It changes who is searching more than it changes how search works. Large industrial development brings in contractors, suppliers and inward investors who need local capability fast, often without existing relationships in the area. That is precisely the buyer who starts with a search rather than a phone call.
How is this report different from a competitor analysis?
A competitor analysis looks at named rivals and what they rank for. This looks at structural patterns across a local economy, a more useful lens before you have decided what to do. Competitor level detail for your specific sector is part of the paid work, not a free page.
Getting this for your own firm
The version of this specific to your firm, with dated figures rather than patterns, is what the Sprint produces.
